Pre-Confederation Patent Maps

Early survey maps showing names of original patentees – often over-written with names of subsequent grantees / owners / lessees.  These maps have been further marked up by modern municipal notations.

The Archives of Ontario introduced patent maps online in 2014, indexed by townships. However, the names of the patentees are not transcribed, nor are they included in our project.

1870's-1880's Maps at McGill University's Digital Atlas Project

Intro – names not included in our databases due to this project’s pre-Confederation focus (pre-1870).  However these maps assist greatly in identifying Concessions and Lots, and McGill has transcribed names of the land-owners in these later time periods.

It was here annually that we used to come in large pic-nic parties, to collect this valuable fruit for our winter preserves, in defiance of black-flies, musquitoes, snakes, and even bears; all which have been encountered by berry-pickers upon this spot, as busy and as active as themselves, gathering an ample repast from Nature’s bounteous lap.
